George Markstein (29 August 1926 – 15 January 1987) was an English writer and journalist who contributed towards the creation and development of the iconic television series, The Prisoner. While there is disagreement as to the extent of Markstein's involvement in the creation of the series, it is generally agreed that he contributed the idea of a resort-like prison for recalcitrant spies, based on Second World War facilities like "Inverlair Lodge." Notably, he also appeared in the pre-title credits portraying the individual whom Number 6 submits his resignation to.

Despite his contributions to the show, Markstein left "The Prisoner" after the production of its first 13 episodes due to creative differences with showrunner Patrick McGoohan. He went on to have a successful career as a journalist and author, but his work on The Prisoner remains a significant contribution to the history of British television and science fiction storytelling.
